Retain vs Acquire

I want to ponder on this quote: "It is cheaper to retain than to acquire"

For me being in a service company, it should be: "...but is better or cheapest to acquire through your retains"

What made me say that is that being in the dynamic industry of Information Technology it is our goal to make sure customers are happy and provide customer references. So rather than in the look out of new clients base, we let the happy customers do that through 'word-by-mouth' or 'viral marketing', both known as one of the best and cheapest marketing strategy where every company longs for.
